The 4Cs of Diamond Quality: Your Complete Guide to Choosing the Perfect Diamond

Every diamond tells a story — but before it becomes yours, it speaks the language of four essential qualities. Understanding the 4Cs of diamond quality is the an important step you can take as a buyer.

The 4Cs of diamonds—Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat—are the global standard used to evaluate a diamond’s quality and value.

Let us walk you through the four internationally recognised standards that determine a diamond’s beauty, rarity, and value.

Diamond Cut

Of all the 4Cs, cut has the greatest influence on a diamond’s visual appeal. It is important to understand that cut is not the same as shape. Shape refers to the diamond’s outline such as round, oval, pear, emerald, princess.

The cut is responsible for rendering diamond sparkle and brilliance, which the diamond is cherished and treasured for. Yes, we are referring to that scintillating effect which makes the diamond twinkle with tiny, captivating rainbow flashes.

Diamond cut is graded on a scale ranging from Excellent to Poor. A diamond cut too shallow allows light to escape through the bottom. One cut too deep loses light through the sides.

When it comes to diamonds, the less colour, the greater the value. The GIA colour grading scale runs from D to Z, where D represents a completely colourless, icy-white diamond of the highest purity, and Z indicates a faint yellow or brownish tint.

Here is a quick breakdown of the colour ranges:

  • D–F: Colourless — the finest quality, exceptionally rare
  • G–J: Near-colourless — beautiful and excellent value
  • K–M: Faint tint — warmth visible to a trained eye
  • N–Z: Light colour — a visible yellow or brown hue

Aurima Jewellers curates diamonds primarily in the D-F colour range, ensuring that every piece appears strikingly white and luminous to the eye. Our diamonds are chosen to complement the metal and enhance the jewellery’s overall radiance.

It is worth noting that diamonds with vivid, saturated hues — such as pink, blue, green, or canary yellow — fall outside this scale entirely and are classified as fancy colour diamonds, a rare and highly sought-after category of their own.

Diamond Clarity

Clarity refers to the degree to which a diamond is free from internal and external imperfections, formed naturally during the crystallisation process. These characteristics are examined by trained gemologists, who assess their number, size, nature, position, and how they affect the stone’s overall appearance.

The Diamond Clarity Scale Explained

  FL (Flawless): No inclusions or blemishes visible under magnification — the rarest grade

  IF (Internally Flawless): No inclusions; minor surface blemishes only

  VVS1–VVS2 (Very Very Slightly Included): Minute inclusions, extremely difficult to detect even under magnification

  VS1–VS2 (Very Slightly Included): Minor inclusions, invisible to the naked eye

  SI1–SI2 (Slightly Included): Inclusions noticeable under magnification, usually not visible to the naked eye

  I1–I3 (Included): Inclusions visible to the naked eye, affecting transparency and brilliance

At Aurima Jewellers, we maintain a strict standard of sourcing diamonds in the VVS clarity range as a baseline, so every stone we set is visually clean, radiant, and refined.

Diamond Carat

Carat is one of the most misunderstood of the 4Cs. Many people assume carat refers to the size of a diamond, but it measures weight. Common carat weights include 0.25ct, 0.50ct, 0.75ct, 1ct, and above.

Does a Higher Carat Always Mean a Better Diamond? Not necessarily. Two diamonds of identical carat weight can look and perform very differently depending on their cut, shape, colour, and clarity.

How the 4Cs Work Together

No single C tells the whole story. The true quality of a diamond emerges when all four elements are considered together. A high-carat diamond with a poor cut will look dull. A flawless diamond with heavy colour will lack that pure, icy glow. The 4Cs are a system, and understanding them together is the key to making a purchase you will treasure for a lifetime.
